Three teenagers have been jailed for a total of more than 15 years after an assault in Braintree last Halloween.

Nineteen year-old Bailey Wood was sentenced to six years and eight months, while 16 year-old boy was given five years and nine months, and a 17 year-old boy was handed a three year sentence.

The 16 and 17 year-old cannot be named legally due to their age. They were 15 and 16 at the time of the incident.

Bailey Wood, of Clockhouse Way, Braintree, was arrested by Essex police officers just over 10 minutes after the assault was reported to them.

A man in his 30s had sustained a stab wound to his chest at around 9.30pm on 31 October last year on Coggeshall Road following an altercation with a group of people while out trick or treating with his children.

Essex police says the man had asked the group to stop swearing because of the young children. The group became abusive to him and he was then assaulted.

After the attack the group left the scene.

Shortly after an officer on patrol was flagged down members of the public and, a description of Wood was given to Essex police who were able to make an arrest shortly after.

The 16 year-old boy was arrested a short time after that while the 17 year-old was arrested on 15 November.

Wood and the 16 year-old were charged with robbery, GBH with intent, possession of a bladed article, and affray.

The 17 year-old was charged with robbery and affray.

All three were convicted on 9 June this year at Chelmsford Crown Court and sentenced on 6 August at the same court.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jessie Grimsey said: “I want to praise the courage of the victim and the quick thinking of the members of the public who flagged down an officer.

“These quick actions helped to lead to swift arrests and bringing the offenders into custody.

“The length of these sentences show that, regardless of age, if you commit a serious crime you can expect a significant amount of time behind bars.

“We will not tolerate upstanding members of the public being targeted as they go about their daily business and we will take action where that happens.”
