It's been one year since her majesty passed away

A year since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, and amidst the remembrances and tributes, one striking mural in Rochford Square stands as a lasting homage to the beloved monarch.
Street artist Dan Kitchener, known by his artistic moniker "Dank," has shared his thoughts on the mural and its creation, with Greatest Hits Radio.
The mural, depicting a youthful Queen Elizabeth II, captured the attention of locals and visitors alike when it first appeared in Rochford Square. Reflecting on the inspiration behind his creation, Dan revealed, "When I heard the news about the Queen's passing, it didn't immediately sink in. But the next day, as I looked at a black and white photo of her as a young woman, I was struck by her energy, life, and sparkle."
Dan's decision to paint the mural was driven by a personal desire to pay his respects rather than seeking attention. "I could have painted it in London on a grand scale, but I chose a small mural locally in Rochford Square," he explained.
During the creation of the mural, Dan felt a deep emotional connection to the Queen. "As I painted her portrait, I felt a connection to the Queen, and it was quite an emotional experience," Dan shared. "There was a profound sense of sadness and loss in the country, which I could sense as I painted."
The mural received widespread acclaim, with locals and passers-by applauding the tribute.
In addition to the mural, Dan has been working on a canvas version of the portrait, which he plans to exhibit at his solo show in London from September 27th to October 2nd, 2023, in Brick Lane.
Dan hopes that his artwork will help people remember the Queen's youthful energy and relatability. "Seeing her as a younger woman makes her feel more human and relatable," he said.
As the mural in Rochford Square continues to touch the hearts of those who pass by, Dan hopes his heartfelt tribute reminds us all of the enduring legacy of Queen Elizabeth II and the profound impact she had on the nation".
"If people see the mural and remember the Queen, that's all I hope for – to honour an incredible lady who will forever hold a special place in our hearts."
