People heading to Stansted Airport urged to leave plenty of time

Rail strikes are set to cause chaos across the country again

With the second day of strike action on the railways underway, people heading to Stansted Airport to go on their holidays are being urged to leave plenty of time.

Following Tuesday’s strike (21 June) which saw more than 40,000 rail workers walk out, similar disruptions are expected today in Essex.

RMT Union members have also backed strike action this Saturday (25 June) following an ongoing dispute over jobs, pay and conditions.

Despite talks yesterday to try and end the dispute, rail employers were still not able to come to an agreement with the railway trade union.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch has accused Transport Secretary Grant Shapps of “wrecking” negotiations.

In a statement released yesterday (22 June) Mick Lynch said: “Until the government unshackle Network Rail and the train operating companies, it is not going to be possible for a negotiated settlement to be agreed.

"We will continue with our industrial campaign until we get a negotiated settlement that delivers job security and a pay rise for our members that deals with the escalating cost of living crisis."

Mr Shapps hit back, saying the RMT claim was a “lie”.

Airport travel advice

Among the routes affected across Essex today, is the Stansted Express.

Stansted Airport have issued advice to travellers making their way to the airport this week.

Matt Davison, Head of Media at Stansted Airport said: “There's extremely limited rail services on those strike days so it's really sensible for passengers to consider those alternative options and allow plenty of time for their journeys.

“There are numerous coach and bus services to the airport so, again, we would advise passengers to pre book those services where possible to guarantee them a seat, and avoid any delays when they get to those coaches.

“I think the critical advice for passengers is be aware, plan ahead your journeys and give yourself enough time to arrive in time for your flight and avoid any disappointment.”

Greater Anglia and c2c services are also being affected in the county, you can find out more about disruption here.
