Royal couple unveil new eco-friendly train for Southend pier
It was unveiled by the future King and Queen
Southend Pier is now home to some new eco-friendly trains.
During their Royal Visit yesterday to mark Southend's new city status, Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall revealed one had been named after the late MP, Sir David Amess.
The former Southend-West MP had been the biggest supporter of the campaign to grant Southend city status.
The battery-powered trains will be used to take visitors from the shoreline to the end of the Pier, which, at 1.33 miles in length is the longest pleasure pier in the world.
It’s cost £3.25 million to replace the existing diesel trains, which have been in operation since 1986.
The new trains are coloured in heritage green and cream which were the colours of the trains running on Southend Pier from 1949 to 1978.
