A man who indecently assaulted a teenage girl in Southend more than 20 years ago has been jailed.

63 year old Michael McKenzie, of the Grove, was charged with a number of offences in 2019, after the victim came forward to report what happened to her.

She was under the age of 18 at the time of the offences, between 1996 and 1998.

McKenzie was convicted of indecent assault on 29 October following a trial at Basildon Crown Court - today he was handed two years and eight months in prison.

Detective Sergeant Shirley Close, of the Essex Police 'Quest' team, said:

“The victim in this case has shown a huge amount of courage in reporting Michael McKenzie had done.

“What she has experienced has had a significant impact on her as she has grown older and become an adult.

“She has deserved justice and I’m glad we’ve been able to achieve that for her.”

Quest was set up in 2019 to investigate non-recent allegations of child abuse.
