A plaque commemorating murdered MP Sir David Amess is nearly ready to be placed in the House of Commons chamber, his successor has said.

Anna Firth, the Conservative MP for Southend West, said the tribute to her predecessor would bear the motto 'His Light Remains'.

Sir David, who was an MP for nearly 40 years, was stabbed during a constituency surgery at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, in October 2021.

MPs agreed to name the final debate held in the Commons before it adjourns for the summer after Sir David in tribute to him.

He was known for his colourful contributions to the session, in which MPs are encouraged to raise any matters they wish with the Government.

Speaking during the debate, Ms Firth told MPs: "Speaking in the second Sir David Amess adjournment debate is a huge privilege for me and it is wonderful to hear so many warm wishes and memories and I know it is a great comfort to Lady Amess and the whole family.

"Many people have said to me when is a plaque going to go up in this chamber to commemorate Sir David.

"I am absolutely delighted to tell you that that plaque has now been designed, it is now nearly ready and... I do want to tell the House that if anyone wants to come and see the plaque it is extremely beautiful and I have a copy on the bench here.

"The motto says 'His Light Remains', which I think is incredibly apt."

A Commons plaque was unveiled in 2017 for Labour MP Jo Cox, who was shot and stabbed in her Batley and Spen constituency in June 2016.

Her plaque included the motto 'More in Common', inspired by her maiden speech as an MP.

There are also plaques commemorating MPs killed in the two world wars on the wood-panelled walls of the Commons chamber, as well as for those who were victims of IRA attacks.
