Small businesses in Essex call for support against shoplifters
There have been 300 more cases of shoplifting in the county than last year
Small businesses in Essex are calling for more support from the Government as shoplifting figures rise during the cost of living crisis.
It has been revealed in statistics released by Essex Police that there have been 300 more cases of shoplifting between the months of August-October, compared to the same period in the previous year.
This also marks the first time in three years it has stagnated over 800 per month for over three months.
Police say that they will investigate shoplifting when it occurs.
David Bell, who owns multiple businesses in Essex, and is the Regional Chair for the Federation of Small Businesses says that many owners have been left in a "difficult position" as, while shoplifting will negatively impact sales, and will result in the increase of prices, they know that many shoplifters do so because they're struggling to get food on the table:
"What we're seeing today is unprecedented. Shop owners are being heavily affected by the cost of living as many are struggling to afford not just luxury items, but just basic staple needs and food to put on the table for them and their children," says Bell.
"It's very tough as a businesses owner, there's a moral side to this where we know it's impacting the businesses. The flip side is that many of these people have families to feed and support.
"Everyone needs to be aware, and we need to look out for each other. If someone comes in and shoplifts then they're in the wrong and they should not be doing it.
"It's a criminal act. However, if they're at the point where they cant feed themselves, what do we do?"
