A man has died whilst running the Southend Half Marathon.

The organisers of the event, Havens Hospices, have posted a statement on their website, in which the runner's death has been announced "with immense sadness".

The half marathon, which raises funds for the charity, took place yesterday in Southend.

A statement from Havens Hospices says: "It is with immense sadness that we can confirm a runner who took part in the Southend Half Marathon has died.

"The male runner collapsed on the route and treatment was given immediately. Paramedics, ambulances and an air ambulance attended shortly afterwards to give further medical treatment. His next of kin have been informed.

"Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

"We know this is very upsetting news for the whole running community and our thoughts are with all those affected."

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called just before 11am with reports of a medical emergency on Mess Road in Shoeburyness.

“Two ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle, a rapid response vehicle and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the scene. Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical crews, an adult man was pronounced dead at the scene.”
