RSPCA urges pet owners in Essex to be wary of fireworks
The RSPCA have told us how we can protect our pets from the stress of loud displays
The RSPCA is encouraging pet owners in Essex to plan ahead and take steps to protect their furry friends from the stress and anxiety that fireworks can bring.
RSPCA spokesperson Sarah Williams, has emphasized the importance of taking precautions to ensure the well-being of pets during this time of year.
"The loud noises and bright flashes of fireworks can be extremely distressing to our pets, particularly dogs, cats, and smaller animals like rabbits and guinea pigs"
Williams provided specific advice for concerned pet owners. "It's essential to provide a safe and secure environment for your pets. This may include keeping them indoors, closing windows, and drawing curtains to muffle the sounds and reduce the visual impact of fireworks."
Furthermore, Williams suggested: "Make sure your pets are microchipped and their information is up-to-date, in case they get scared and escape. You should also ensure they are wearing a collar with an ID tag, so that they can be easily identified and returned home if they do manage to get out."
For those who intend to host firework displays or live in areas where fireworks are common, the RSPCA recommends informing your neighbors with pets about your plans in advance. "Letting your neighbors know about your fireworks display allows them to prepare and take necessary precautions for their pets, which can make a significant difference in reducing stress for the animals," Williams explained.
The RSPCA also advises pet owners to stay calm and not to reprimand their animals if they become frightened during fireworks. "Comforting your pets and offering them their favourite toys or treats can help alleviate their anxiety," said Williams.
