Published 4th Jul 2021

RSPCA recruits 23 animal rescue officers "from all walks of life" including one position in the East.

Officers in this new role are responsible for rescuing animals from hedgehogs to huntsman spiders. They also investigate allegation of neglect and cruelty.

A year-long training course prepares new recruits for every possible situation from abseiling down a mountain to carrying out water rescue.

RSPCA has published a video to show applicants what to expect.

Dermot Murphy, head of the inspectorate said:

“This is a difficult job which needs a resilient character but there are also truly magical moments, such as removing animals from a situation where they are suffering and seeing them heal, physically and mentally. "

Applicants should be physically fit, emotionally stable and good communicators to handle difficult or even confrontational situations. Experience of working with animals is desired, but not required.

They also must be comfortable with heights and cramped spaces, and have no allergies to animals.

The training course is set to begin on 8 November 2021. For more information, visit the RSPCA website.
