The RSPCA has launched an investigation after several cats were seriously injured in Hornchurch, having been shot with an air rifle.

Two of the incidents took place in the Plumpton Avenue area over the past month. Animal welfare experts are trying to identify those responsible.

A tabby cat, Milo, is recovering after being shot in the leg, with a 4.5mm steel bullet penetrating her stomach.

She survived a two and a half hour operation which say part of her intestine removed.

Fleur, another tabby, was shot in the face. Another cat was also injured earlier this year.

RSPCA inspector Chris McGreal said: “These are disturbing incidents and we are concerned they are going to continue unless something is done.

“There is someone shooting cats in this area and we would appeal to anyone with information to come forward and contact the RSPCA. Two cats have been shot in recent weeks and one earlier in the year.”

The Metropolitan Police have been informed and are also investigating.
