Firefighters are set to return to the scene of a serious fire at a recycling centre in Rochford to check its safe.

Five crews were sent to Purdeys Road just after 5pm last night following 15 calls to a fire at the recycling centre.

Firefighters worked to put out the fire, which had spread to around 150 tonnes of rubbish, in sections.

They worked with staff to move waste using cranes on site.

By 10.30pm it had been scaled down to two crews who stayed into the early hours to ensure there were no hotspots.

Watch Manager Dan Hart from Southend Fire Station said: “We want to send our thanks to the staff that worked with us throughout this large incident, particularly on the machinery.

“They made a huge contribution and without them crews would have been in attendance for days. They have saved the service a significant amount of resource and we are really grateful for their help.”
