Southend Pier was visited by a record 24,000 people in January - nearly double the number the attraction got in December.

It marks the landmark's best January attendance since records began 15 years ago.

That's despite the month traditionally being difficult for the 1.33 mile pier because of the harsh weather.

Visitor numbers were also particularly low last year because of coronavirus restrictions.

The pier has had some major upgrades recently, including new eco-firendly trains and new public toilets.

Cllr Carole Mulroney, of Southend on Sea Borough Council, said:

“We’ve had a record-breaking month for tourism to the pier last month and I envisage this will continue to grow throughout the year.

"I’d like to thank pier staff and those working on the pier upgrades for their continued hard work and dedication to improving one of our most iconic attractions.

“Southend has a lot of fantastic upcoming projects and events, and I am sure that locals and those from further away will want to see what is in store."
