Police in Southend granted extra stop and search powers after 'disorder' on seafront
Two people suffered stab wounds during the incidents last night
Police in Southend have been granted additional powers to stop and search people after disorder along the city's seafront last night.
A 24 hour Section 60 order was put in place at 9:30pm after police were called to a fight involving weapons and a robbery after 7pm.
Two people suffered stab wounds in the incidents and have been treated in hospital.
The order covers the area around the seafront and allows police to carry out searches without reasonable suspicion.
Inspector David Gardiner said: “We want law-abiding residents and visitors to be able to enjoy Southend in the sun in peace without fear of the wellbeing being put at risk.
“That’s why we’re using the tools we have available to us to tackle those coming to our city to carry out crime and violence.
“Additionally, officers were diverted to Southend last night to help keep you safe and to tackle those intent on causing harm and we are directing officers from elsewhere in the county to support again today.”
