Eighteen drivers convicted of drink or drug driving have been fast-tracked to disqualification by Essex Police.

Last week, 41 people were arrested as part of the campaign to tackle drink and drug driving in the county.

That brings the force's total arrests in between 28th November and 18th December for drink drive offences to 117 and drug drive arrests to 104 with a further total of 38 people arrested on suspicion of failing to provide a specimen in the last four weeks.

This comes as the police have been working with the courts to get cases processed quickly.

Now anyone suspected of committing these offences will appear at court within 48 hours.

Leading the response to the issue, Inspector Matt Crow, Essex Police’s Roads Policing Team, says they're trying to raise awareness of their “Drink Driving – Together We Can Stop It” campaign: “We’ve been asking the public to help us and support our campaign which aims to save lives by deterring people from drink and drug-driving, and to use the 3 Ps principle of prevent, persuade and, as a last resort, police.”
