Personal trainers in Essex have warned budding gym goers about the New Year fitness surge, and the risks of throwing yourself in at the deep end.

The New Year often means new fitness goals for many, however, instead of going to the gym seven days a week, personal trainers are encouraging people to take it slow and steady in order to achieve their resolutions.

CJ White, who is a personal trainer across Chigwell, Loughton and Brentwood and owns 301 Fitness, wants to make sure people don't burn out: "Whenever you go to a gym in January it is absolutely rammed off the wall; people doing some of the craziest exercises. It's just not sustainable.

"The number one goal is to just take your time with it. Quick fixes are just that, they're quick fixes, they aren't going to give you the long term result that you're looking for."

White continues by explaining that the sudden surge for customers can be quite challenging for personal trainers, as it often means that most of their income comes from the first month of the year.

"Its this time of year that personal trainers get the most revenue. You do get that influx of clients that think 'New Year New Me' and they have typically been a little less active over Christmas, eating a little bit more, and now they want to lose some weight.

"It's difficult because sometimes you'll go from your standard clients to double or sometimes triple your customer basis and you've got to fit that in and try to cater to everybody's needs," says White. "Then, four to six weeks later you're back down to half the clients you had and you have a lot more open space."
