People are being encouraged to help improve air quality in Colchester.

A new pilot scheme, called Park Active, has been launched with the aim of reducing the number of cars in the town centre area.

It allows people to park at designated car parks outside of the centre for less, then complete the rest of the journey on foot or bicycle.

The main aim of the scheme is to improve air quality and reduce congestion, while also encouraging a more healthier lifestyle for visitors.

To take part in it people must be signed up to the contactless parking payment system, MiPermit, and then the free Park Active scheme within it.

Visitors will then be able to park for 50p per hour for up to four hours between 6am and 6pm Monday to Saturday at the designated locations:

  • Butt Road Car Park (MiPermit code: 337827)
  • Napier Road North Car Park (MiPermit Code: 337838)
  • Napier Road South Car Park (MiPermit Code: 337841)

Richard Walker, the North Essex Parking Partnership's Group Manager, said:

"Not only does the scheme support Colchester Borough Council’s climate emergency declaration by reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality, but it also encourages healthier active travel, such as walking and cycling and rewards those that use the scheme, with reduced parking costs.

"We know that interest and uptake of walking and cycling has increased over the past year and for those who are keen to keep that up as restrictions ease, this scheme is a great way to do that."

According to Richard, they are also considering the introduction of a E-scooter hire at the designated car parks, bicycle parking for regular travelers, and potential delivery services for shoppers.
