Knitted and crocheted poppies have lined Southend Pier, in an art display.

Over 110,000 of the red flowers have been installed along the 1.3 mile long pier, being visible to the public until the 16th of November.

Almost 5km of yarn was used to tie the poppies together, with over 1000 volunteers from across the globe contributing to the display.

Locals were at the heart of the effort, but poppies were received from countries like New Zealand, Canada and the USA.

The world's longest pleasure pier has been transformed to honour those who served and sacrificed in times of war.

Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend City Council, said it was "fantastic" to see the poppies.

"It's just a fantastic demonstration of Southend's civic pride, our pride in our military and our armed forces, and the sacrifice that so many before us have made.

"We have an incredible sculpture, by a local sculptor Dave Taylor, and it contains 2,106 of those poppies. Each one of them representing a local life lost in one of the world wars."

Matt Dent, Cabinet Member for Business, Culture, Music and Tourism, said:

"This all started with a member of our culture and tourism team.

"When we first started we were talking about 15-20,000 poppies. We have ended up with 110,000.

"Remembrance is something that Southend takes incredibly seriously, and I think this is a perfect illustration of it.

"I have never seen anything like this, I doubt we will see anything of this size again, in the near future. And ultimately I think it's incredibly poignant."

John Fulton, local veteran, told us that the event was "massively important" for Remembrance.

"If these events don't continue I feel that certainly Remembrance as we used to know it, will slide into the past.

"These are very, very important, not just for Remembrance, but for the whole community.

"The work that has been done by the community on this has just been incredible."

Kirsten Swan, Poppy Appeal Manager for Essex, told us that last year they raised £1.4 million in the county, and they hope this event will lead to more donations.

"I grew up here so I have walked the pier many a time myself and Southend is one of the hearts of Essex, so an art installation on this scale will attract so many people.

"Essex is one of the largest counties in the country for the Poppy Appeal."
