A woman has thanked police officers for their support after she reported a rape in Essex in 2022.
22-year-old Marc Cheeney, who's from Great Yeldham, was jailed for five years for rape on Wednesday (12th November).
He was also given a ten year restraining order and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.
An Essex police spokesperson said, "He Cheeney had previously pled guilty to one count of coercive and controlling behaviour.
"He had denied the charge of rape, but the jury did not believe him. He was also given 10 year restraining order and was placed on sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
"Cheeney was arrested in November 2022 after his crimes were reported to police, and an investigation was launched.
"Cheeney, of Toppesfield Road, Great Yeldham, admitted that he had treated the victim badly during interview, but denied the rape allegation.
"Following a detailed and sensitive investigation, which had started when the report came into police in August of 2022, he was charged in November 2023."
The survivor's statement
“It was the kindness and understanding of the officer I initially reported concerns to that gave me the strength and confidence to say exactly what had happened to me.”
“It’s difficult to put into words how appreciative I am for the support and commitment of the police throughout this time.
“And now that he has been convicted and sentenced for what he did to me I feel such a relief and see a fresh beginning is in front of me. I did it for myself, but I also did it for all women. I don’t want anyone else to go through what I did.”
