A Basildon man has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 23 years for the murder of another man he attacked in a block of flats.

Codey Nolan 33, attacked 42-year-old Hassan Bousanguar in the Riverview Centre in Vange on 4 May 2024.

Hassan was found injured in the communal hallway shortly afterwards.

Police located Nolan, formerly of Riverview in Vange, in Brighton on 9 May, brought him back to Essex and he was convicted and jailed for causing Hassan grievous bodily harm with intent in November 2024.

Sadly, as a result of his injuries, Hassan passed away in December 2024.

Nolan was then charged with murder, and after a seven-day trial at Basildon Crown Court, a jury unanimously convicted him on Tuesday (9 December).

Today (10 December) Her Honour Judge Samantha Leigh sentenced Nolan to life in prison with a minimum of 23 years.

Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe, who led both the assault and murder investigations, said: "At the centre of all our work has been Hassan, his family, and securing the justice they deserve.

"While nothing will ever make up for the loss and hurt they have felt since May 2024, I hope this outcome serves as a small comfort to those who knew and loved him.

"Nolan has not left custody since his arrest in May last year, and now faces spending the rest of his life behind bars.

"It’s due to the diligence and perseverance of my officers, of the Crown Prosecution Service, our barristers Alex Stein and Emma Kutner and the medical experts that left no doubt in the jurors minds that Nolan was responsible for the injuries that caused Hassan’s death.

"I’d like to thank them again for all their work a second time in ensuring this case reached the right conclusion.

"Most importantly, I’d like to thank Hassan’s family for conducting themselves with the upmost dignity throughout these cases."

Hassan’s family said: "Hassan was and will always be a much-loved son, brother and uncle.

"He was the most genuine and reliable friend with selfless commitment to people and humanity."
