A man has been found responsible for attacking a police officer with a piece of broken glass in Harlow.

The incident took place on September 7, 2022, when officers were called to Station Approach around 4 PM to assist with a missing persons inquiry involving 23-year-old Ahmed Poka.

Upon arrival, an officer approached Poka, who then attacked the officer by slashing his jaw and neck with a piece of glass, resulting in a severe injury.

Poka was charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon but was later deemed unfit to stand trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Consequently, he underwent a trial of facts, a special proceeding for defendants unable to enter a plea.

On June 3, 2024, after evaluating the key evidence, the jury concluded within 28 minutes that Poka had committed the act.

He will remain in custody until a future hearing, where the final outcome will be decided. The date for this hearing is yet to be determined.
