A man from Basildon who hit another man on the head with a hammer during a road rage incident has been jailed.

Essex Police say they were called to Whitmore Way at just before 5.30pm on Monday 17 February to reports of an assault taking place.

42 year old Anthony Larwood was arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Larwood, of Epping Close, Chelmsford, admitted the offences when he appeared at Basildon Crown Court.

The court heard there had been an incident while Larwood and the victim were both driving their cars.

Following a disagreement, both men got out of their vehicles and Larwood, who had a hammer, reportedly damaged the victim’s car.

He drove off and while the victim was on the phone to the police, Larwood returned to the scene and hit the victim on the back of his head with the hammer.

Det Con Shannon Ross said:

"We were faced with a man who had serious injuries to his head following a violent road rage incident which happened in front of many people during a busy rush hour period.

"There was an initial altercation between the two drivers, but Larwood returned to the scene and assaulted the victim with a hammer.

"Our team worked hard to piece together the sequence of events and track down the person responsible."

Larwood was jailed for four and half years and ordered to serve a further three years on licence for the GBH with intent.

He was jailed for 9 months for possession of an offence weapon and this will run concurrently.

He was ordered also ordered to pay compensation.

A 36-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of affray following the incident remains on police bail.
