A man from Clacton has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 15 years for the murder of his mother.

Essex police were called to an address in Clacton on Friday 21 March after reports that a woman was seriously injured.

Emergency services attended the scene but Rachel Dixon, 49 was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local officers saw a man at the front door of the address in Skelmersdale Road who locked the door when challenged.

Officers were able to gain entry round the back of the property and found the defendant Olive Grange in the garden.

Grange, 24, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

During a police interview Grange, of Skelmersdale Road, Clacton, read a prepared statement and then refused to answer questions.

He appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday 26 June where he pleaded guilty to murder.

At the same court today (Friday 29 August) he was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 15 years.

Detective Chief Inspector Greg Wood, who led our investigation, said:

“This was a truly horrific and violent attack.

“While Grange has now been sentenced, it does not detract from the fact that Rachel’s future has been taken away from her and her loved ones continue to be devastated by their loss.

“Our thoughts remain with Rachel’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We know this loss is felt widely.

“The officers who attended the scene of this murder worked with paramedics to try and save Rachel that day, and bravely went into the house to apprehend Grange.”

Following the sentencing Rachel’s family paid tribute to her, saying:

“Our beautiful daughter, sister, mother and auntie, who will be greatly missed by all who was taken away from us far too soon.”
