Man jailed for 34 months for causing death of passenger after losing control of his car in Hockley

A man's been jailed for 34 months, after causing the death of his passenger, after speeding and losing control of his car.

32-year-old Matthew Clarke, of Ballygonell Road, Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, was driving along Church Road in Hockley on October 29th, 2021, when he approached a junction at Lower Road at the speed of 67 miles per hour, too fast to stop at the Give Way sign.

He lost control of the car, despite trying to break last minute, and shot across theT-junction before colliding with a bungalow under renovation at the time.

Clarke and passenger Andrew Basford were on their way to work when the collision occurred, it was captured on CCTV.

Andrew Basford, 54 and from Warsop, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, died from his injuries at the scene.

Andrew left behind a loving partner, Kerry, and was a loving son, brother, father and grandfather.

Driver, Matthew Clarke, sustained lifechanging injuries, including a head injury.

He pleaded guilty to charged of causing Andrew's death by dangerous driving.

On Friday (March 22) he was sentenced to 34 months in prison at Southend Crown Court, and has been disqualified from driving for two years, needing to complete an extended test before driving again.

Roads Policing officer Detective Sergeant Alex Black, who led the investigation, said: “My thoughts are with Andrew’s family today. I hope today gives them the closure they need to move on with their lives.”
