Man confirmed dead after assault in Chelmsford

The man was taken to hospital and died on Friday.

Essex Police say they are now in a position to confirm a man has died after being assaulted in Chelmsford on Wednesday.

Officers were called to Legg Street shortly before 9:15pm following reports of a man being seriously assaulted. The victim, a man in his 60s sadly passed away in hospital yesterday (4 August). His family are aware and receiving support from specialist officers.

A 20-year-old man from Chelmsford has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm without intent in connection with this investigation. He has since been released on bail until 1 November, whilst enquiries continue.

The force say the incident remains under investigation and officers are continuing to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time to get in contact.

It’s believed that the incident started with a confrontation between the drivers of two vehicles- one being a black Vauxhall Corsa and the other being a white Luton van, at the junction of New Street and Legg Street.

The incident then continued onto Legg Street where the victim was seriously assaulted.

Anyone who witnessed the assault, or the moments leading up to it is asked to contact police.
