A 34-year-old man has been charged with communicating a bomb hoax, after an incident in Southend this weekend.

Police were called to Victoria Business Park in Short Street on Saturday 13 July, after an unidentified bag was left at a commercial property by a suspect.

Working with fire, ambulance and British Transport Police colleagues, officers temporarily placed a cordon and evacuated the surrounding properties, before ensuring the bag was safe.

A man was arrested shortly after and now 34-year-old Elsaid Omar, of no fixed abode, has been charged with communicating a bomb hoax.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Southend-on-Sea Magistrates Court today, Monday 15 July.

Police are thanking the public for their co-operation, while the closures in Southend city centre were in place.
