Man arrested after five red kites found poisoned in Orsett
Police warn the substances used are dangerous to both wildlife and humans.
An Aveley man has been arrested after five red kites were discovered dead in a field in Orsett. Essex Police’s Rural Engagement Team is investigating, as harming or killing birds of prey is a criminal offence.
PC Luke Jones said tests confirmed the birds had been poisoned, adding that the substances used are “deadly not only to wildlife but also to humans”.
Red kites and all birds of prey are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Police are urging anyone who finds a dead bird of prey or suspects illegal activity to report it via the Essex Police website.
