Southend United's Head Coach, Kevin Maher, is focusing on securing high-quality additions to his squad rather than simply increasing numbers.

With six matches scheduled for the first month of 2024, Maher is actively pursuing potential new players, aiming to enhance the team's strength and depth.

Following the recent confirmation of midfielder James Morton's signing Maher stated, "We're working on it. We have a clear idea of what we want to bring in, and there are offers on the table. We're pushing to expedite the process as much as possible, considering the tight schedule.

"Our goal is always to bring someone in before each game, but more importantly, we want to focus on quality."

Maher emphasized the desire to create healthy competition within the squad, stating, "We want players who can push the team forward and add competition. We aim to be in a position where earning a spot in the starting lineup requires consistently high performance, as someone of equal quality waits on the sidelines."

Reflecting on the recent intense fixture schedule, Maher expressed satisfaction with the team's fitness levels, saying, "There's no issue with fitness; the players are in good shape. The festive schedule wasn't too demanding, and we've had a productive week of training and rest at the right intervals."

Maher provided further insight into the team's approach, saying, "Getting someone in before Saturday (against Halifax town) is always the aim, but we wanted someone in before the last game. I think the players that are in the building want to see quality come in that can push the team on and add competition."
