The construction of a new link road in Essex will unlock land needed to provide at least 7,500 new homes, councillors have ruled.

Essex County Council’s cabinet on Tuesday (July 18) gave the green light for procuring a construction contract for the road, with work starting in February 2024.

Plans for the  link road in conjunction with the A133 ‘Rapid Transit System’ include a bi-direction bus lane, a park and ride service and a four-lane dual carriageway.

Together, they will form part of the Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community and help link the development to the wider North Essex district.

In addition to bridging an existing gap in fast and efficient transport links to Colchester from across the county, the construction of the link road and transit system will aim to ease congestion and simplify commuter journeys to and from the city.

Currently, approximately 50,000 commuters pass through the borough daily.

Presenting a report assessing the predicted impact of the link road and Rapid Transit System, Councillor Tom Cunningham (Con., Greater Notley and Black Notley) said their delivery is “essential” to ensuring the success of the Garden Community development as a whole.

The primary aim of the Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community is to provide adequate accommodation for the area’s growing population whilst maintaining an environmentally-conscious outlook.

The development will also provide a direct link to the University of Essex.
