Learner Drivers in Essex advised to only book a test if you're sure you'll pass

The DVSA currently has a backlog of 420,000 tests

There are currently 420,000 car tests in the backlog and the national average waiting time for a driving test is 17 weeks.

In a bid to clear the backlog the DVSA (Driving Vehicle Standards Agency) are asking people to only take their test when they are confident they can pass. This will not only help them avoid a lengthy wait for a retest but also help by not adding to the backlog.

Driving instructor in the East Stephen Green told us it's been a tough year and demand will now increase:

"Pressure will come from the market, the market being the learners, we will probably get contacted from outside the region from people who have booked a driving test"

He also said not to let it stop you getting started:

"Don't be put off, but just be prepared the systems that we had in place when talk to your friends who've passed previously, the waiting times are going to impact on you"

In a recent letter to instructors across the UK the DVSA's new Chief Executive wrote:

There are challenging times ahead for all of us. By working together, we can help to reduce the backlog, help your industry recover and help people stay safe on Britain’s roads.
