As temperatures drop in Essex after reaching a record 39 degrees yesterday, we're being reminded of the importance of staying safe in the sun, and in open water.

With temperatures still in the high twenties, it’s still really hot and many of us will be going for a dip to cool off – but it’s important we do it safely – especially in open water.

It's after Greatest Hits Radio launched its #GetWaterWise campaign to remind us of the dangers of open water swimming.

Connor James is the co-founder of Aqua Park Lakeside, an inflatable obstacle course, which operates on Alexandra Lake, a former quarry site, in Thurrock – he says it's the perfect place to safely cool off in hot weather: "We have some of the highest trained lifeguards in the UK monitoring our parks so that when people come and visit us, they're supervised by trained staff that know what they're doing, should anything go wrong." he says safety

Safety is key to their operation: "This water sports activity is physically demanding, and there's a chance you might be dragged under the water at points.

"Therefore, it's a requirement that you are able to swim at least 25 metres unaided, are 6 or older, or at least 1.2 metres tall."

Not worth the risk

With July being one of the worst months for water-related fatalities, and with experts fearing a rise in the number of accidental drownings this summer due to stay-at-home holidays, a lack of swimming education and warmer weather - it's key to remember how to stay #WaterWise.
