Survey work will soon begin ahead of a market project on the site of the former Sunspot arcade in Jaywick Sands, following the appointment of a design team.

Plans for the £2 million project include a covered market, 13 affordable business units, a community garden and hard landscaping on the seafront.

The bulk of the funding has come from the Government's Getting Building Fund announced in November, with £105,000 and £50,000 coming from TDC and Essex County Council respectively.

Colchester-based HAT Projects will oversee the scheme, which also involves improvements to road safety through new pavements and lighting.

Once survey works are complete, a planning application will be made.

Paul Honeywood, TDC Cabinet Member with special responsibility for Jaywick Sands, said: "The site is such a key location to the Brooklands and Grasslands area of Jaywick Sands, acting as a gateway to those communities, so it is important that the project is a real landmark,” Cllr Honeywood said.

"This scheme will see units built which will support small businesses and start-ups in the area, and bring jobs and employment to the community. Facing the fantastic sandy beach, we think there is a great potential to encourage more visitor trade through new businesses and the market.

"I am pleased to welcome HAT Projects on board, knowing that their experience and previous work in Jaywick Sands in particular, will really benefit this scheme and drive it forward."

Hana Loftus, Director at HAT Projects, added: "Jaywick Sands is such a brilliant place to work in due to the energy in the community and the desire to work together to improve things.

"We are excited to be involved in this project to deliver something which will be a real benefit to local residents."
