Last year it was reported that there were over 301 thousand sewage spillages off our coastlines: it’s thought that this amounts to around 824 spillages a day.

Ministers want to make ‘polluters pay’ by enforcing unlimited fines under new measures to combat this issue.

It’s been reported that Environmental Secretary Therese Coffey wants authorities to impose sanctions without having to go through lengthy court processes.

One person voicing concern is 8th generation Oyster farmer Tom Haward from Essex - fears it's only a matter of time before a spill will affect his family business.

“If you are pumping sewage into the sea, it will contaminate them and shut us down or make someone really ill”

“so, 300 years of us growing oysters as a family, sewage could stop that in an instant”

Next week its thought ministers will announce plans to address concerns like Tom’s, addressing all sources of pollution .
