Over £300k in fines and court costs handed out by Greater Anglia
It is from people travelling with no ticket on their trains
Greater Anglia ordered just under £325,000 in fines and court costs for those with no ticket.
Between May – July this year, 1032 people admitted to travelling on Greater Anglia trains without a ticket.
These offences occurred across the whole of the Greater Anglia network, which includes Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.
Between May and June, Magistrates dealt with 586 cases and imposed £110,901 in fines and £69,280 in costs.
Head of revenue protection at Greater Anglia, Kim Bucknell said,
‘Obviously, most of our customers are travelling with the right ticket, but when we come across people without a ticket or the wrong ticket, we will take action…
For every £1 spent on rail fares, 98p is invested in the railway. By not paying for a ticket, there’s less money available for investment to improve the railway for everyone.’
Those who board a train without a ticket can face being taken to court.
Those who travel with the wrong ticket can face penalty fares.
