Grays woman sentenced after admitting to killing her mum
Cheryl Banks, 60, was the primary carer for 89 year-old Winifred Grover - who died last year
A Grays woman had been handed a suspended sentence after admitting to killing her mother.
60 year old Cheryl Banks, of Lenmore Avenue, was the carer for 89 year old Winifred Grover, who had on-set dementia and Alzheimers.
She was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in their shared home on 21 June last year.
A post mortem later found she was smothered.
Banks later admitted to manslaughter by diminished responsibility and was cleared of murder at Basildon Crown Court.
Today (April 1) she was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended by two years, and a 90 day rehabilitation order.
In a prepared statement, she told police she had experienced mental health issues and loved her mother very much.
Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Kevin Hughes said:
“This has been a truly tragic case and my team and I have been left really saddened.
“Winifred Grover was an elderly woman who required constant care.
“At the time of Winifred’s death, the jury found Cheryl Banks’ mental state was such that she was not properly in control of her actions.
“Every part of this case has brought heartache for the family and I want to share my condolences, and those of my team, with them.”
