To meet net zero carbon emissions by 2030 Basildon council have introduced a subscription scheme for garden waste.

This means that if residents have not yet subscribed, they will not have their garden waste bin collected. The council advise that is collections have been missed not to report but to subscribe via their website.

Within 10 days of signing up to the new collection scheme, those applying will be sent a confirmation letter, along with a permit sticker (to fix to your container) , and a container if you do not already have one.

Jonathan Carr- West is the Chief Executive of the Local Government Information Unit:

‘Councils have a series of duties that are set out in law, collection of garden waste is not one of those.’

‘If people don’t want to subscribe, to put it bluntly, their garden waste will not be collected.’

It’s thought that over 70% of councils across the UK already have a subscription scheme in place to charge for the collection of garden waste.
