Free bikes for people in Tendring... but there's a catch!

Around 1,500 bikes are going to be handed out

People living in Tendring could be able to get hold of a free bike.

1,500 are going to be handed out, starting in Clacton and Jaywick, for a year's free trial.

But there is a catch - users will have to go for a ride at least once a week or they'll lose the bike.

Essex Pedal Power say they have identified particular wards within Clacton and Jaywick where residents will benefit most from becoming a regular cyclist.

Residents living in wards Bluehouse, Coppins, Jaywick, Pier, St James, St Johns and West Clacton, will be given priority.

The Active Essex website says:

"The project will initially loan a brand-new bike free of charge to eligible residents of Clacton and Jaywick for a period of a year.

"If the bike has been used at least once a week during this time, the applicant will be able to keep the bike at the end of the loan.

"The Essex Pedal Power team will be able to monitor the bike usage via a GPS tracking system, which will provide data on how the bike is used."

They say that Essex Pedal Power is an inclusive project and will provide bikes for adults and children over the age of 12, with specially adapted bikes available for those with differing needs.

For those who need it, training packages will be offered free of charge.

New community cycling clubs are planned for children and young people.

If this is successful, areas in the rest of Essex could see the scheme extended to them.
