Ford set to cut over 1000 jobs in Essex
The Unite Union say they'll look to protect as many as possible
Car manufacturer Ford has announced plans to cut up to 1300 jobs over the next three years at its Essex campus.
The company has said that around 1000 of the jobs cut will be engineering roles at the Dunton Technical Centre in Laindon.
The move is part of a major restricting programme across Europe as the company focuses on electrical vehicles.
Unite union National Officer Des Quinn said: “Its going to have massive repercussions for the area and the industry".
"For the area, obviously 1000 well paid quality jobs going is never a good thing and its going to impact the local authority and the local community.“
"In terms of the industry I think this is the start of the thin end of the wedge.”
He added that they will try to protect as many jobs as possible.
“There will be things we can do, we will be tough on the company, we look to mitigate as many of those job losses as possible.
“We will look at every single job title that’s lost and how that’s relevant to the kind of cutbacks the company says it needs to make. If its not required because of the move to electrification, and if its not required for good reason or good sense we will oppose those losses.”
