Firefighters have walked a man to safety, after arriving at a fire in Southend this morning.

Crews were called to Burr Hill Chase around 4:35am, where upon arrival other residents were shouting a man was in the second floor flat that was alight.

As firefighters headed to the flat, the man appeared at the door, and was walked to safety.

He's seen been given oxygen for smoke inhalation.

The second floor flat has been destroyed by the blaze, which was stopped from spreading to neighbouring homes.

An investigation into the cause is due to take place today.

Watch Manager Richard Burch, Southend Fire Station, said: "The fire doors did their job, which meant the fire was contained to the flat where it started. Although sadly the flat has been completely destroyed by fire, there was only some smoke damage to the rest of the floor meaning no one else has lost their home."

Watch Manager Sam Ridley, Leigh Fire Station, added: "Our crews were faced with a significant fire on arrival and it was thanks to their hard work we brought this under control and extinguished it quickly."
