Minute silence held in Essex to mark Firefighters' Memorial Day

Firefighters across Essex have paused for a minute's silence as today (4 May) marks Firefighters' Memorial Day.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service fell silent at midday to "reflect and remember the firefighters who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve their communities".
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Rick Hylton said:
"Today is 30 years since The Queen Mother unveiled The National Firefighters Memorial in London.
"The statue, which stands at St Paul's Cathedral, shows three firefighters serving during the Blitz and it serves as a constant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that firefighters make in serving their public.
"Never has that been more poignant than when we consider the time we're in.
"Everyone at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, firefighters included, have gone the extra mile to support their communities through COVID-19.
"We've been overwhelmed by the kindness and support the public have shown during this time and today we want to take the opportunity to thank you as well.
"Today's National Firefighters' Memorial Day, we stand together to remember all those firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting and serving their communities."
