Essex County Fire and Rescue Service have thanked the crew of a ship at Tilbury Docks, which went up in flames last night (December 6).

Firefighters were called to Tilbury Docks at around 5:43pm, reporting that about 5,000 tonnes of scrap metal was alight on the ship.

The large fire was contained by ECFRS, and firefighters removed the metal in the hold to extinguish parts of the fire, with help from some of the ship's crew and site staff.

It has now been extinguished, and the members of the ship's crew have been thanked by ECFRS for remaining at the scene to help.

Two crews remain on the scene to cool it down and to monitor hotsports.

Crews from Basildon, Brentwood, Grays, Orsett and Rayleigh Weir were all at the scene at Tilbury Docks.

Group Manager Mark Eaglestone said: “A big thank you to the ship’s crew and site staff who remained on scene helping us to extinguish this fire as quickly as possible.”
