Firefighters have been tackling a large fire which broke out at a landfill site in Essex this morning.
Essex County Fire & Rescue ServiceCrews were called to the scene at Warren Lane, in Stanway, at 4.48am where they found approximately 500 metres of rubbish ablaze.
Crews from Colchester, Tiptree, Witham, Halstead and Wivenhoe have all been tackling the blaze, which they say has now been brought under control.
People were earlier advised to avoid the area.
Nearby residents are being urged to keep windows and doors closed due to the amount of smoke coming from the site.
Two off-road vehicles from Billericay and Stansted were also sent to the scene, while the county drone team was deployed to assess the area from above.
Station Manager Gavin Tripp said: “We expect to remain at the scene for several hours to extinguish this fire and I’d like to thank the site staff for their help. We’ve working closely with them to get the fire under control.
“If you live near Warren Lane, please continue to keep your windows and doors shut as there is still a lot of smoke coming from the scene.”
