A number of flats in an area of Brentwood are without power after a fire yesterday morning.

Firefighters from Essex Fire and Rescue Service were called at around 10:17am yesterday (January 14) after reports of smoke filling a hallway of the three-storey block.

The ground floor of the flats in Sawyers Hall Lane was evacuated by firefighters, after finding a ground-floor electrical cupboard was housing the fire.

Those in the first and second floor weren't evacuated due to the building's stay put policy.

Crews found the fire had started after a water pipe crack led to water reaching the fuse board.

Officers on the scene were told it could be several days until the power can be restored, after the fire left many without it.
