Firefighters have remained on the scene of a derelict fire building overnight, which saw 5 stations from across the county attend.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to Church Street yesterday (June 22) at around 8:12pm.

The fire they found was a building measuring approximately 35 metres by 40 metres completely alight.

Later, the roof collapsed, making the extinguishing harder for crews from Sible Hedingham, Halstead, Coggeshall and Braintree.

Colchester's Aerial Ladder Platform and Halstead's Water Bowser were used to supply large amounts of water.

Station Manager Pete Donovan said: "Crews worked extremely hard to get this fire under control as quickly as they did.

"The roof collapsed, which has made fully extinguishing the fire even more difficult.

"A crew will remain at the scene overnight to monitor the scene."

An investigation will be carried out to determine the cause.
