A video challenging the Essex stereotype has been shortlisted for an award.

The campaign #ThisIsEssex was created by Visit Essex and Colchester-based firm Big Wave PR.

Both the tourism body and PR company are up for a joint PRCA Dare Awards and will find out if they are successful on 1 July.

The project showcases the brilliance of the county including Michelin star chefs, a comedian, rally driver, paralympian and oysterman to name a few.

It's hoped, as well as overcoming the Essex stereotype, the video will encourage people to visit and stay in the county, especially as coronavirus restrictions ease.

Lisa Bone, Strategic Tourism Manager at Visit Essex, said:

"People only think of us for one thing. What we want to show is, like our landscape, Essex people are so diverse, so different. We've got some many talented people across the county and we really wanted to put that across.

"We're not really perceived as a short-break destination, lots of people know about us for our seaside and come out for the day. What we want to do is say we've got some amazing villages and rural areas, as well as the cost, and we want people to come and stay in Essex."
