Parts of Essex enter tier 3 due to rise in infections
Colchester and Tendring remain in tier 2 but residents are urged not to be complacent
A large increase in coronavirus infections means Basildon, Brentwood, Harlow, Epping Forest, Castle Point, Rochford, Maldon, Braintree, Chelmsford, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock have been moved into tier 3.
The areas join all of London's 32 boroughs and the city of London, as well as parts of Hertfordshire following the announcement at the start of the week.
In the seven days leading up to 10th December, the rate of infection in Essex increased to 305.3 per 100,000.
Speaking as it was announced on Monday 14th December, Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: "I know that this is difficult news. I know it will mean plans disrupted, and that for businesses affected, this will be a very significant blow.
"So this action is absolutely essential, not just to keep people safe, but because as we’ve seen early action can help prevent more damaging and longer lasting problems later."
While Colchester and Tendring are not affected by the change in restrictions and remain in tier 2, residents are being urged to ensure they take the steps to prevent moving up.
Leader of Colchester Borough Council, Councillor Mark Cory, told us he was proud that Colchester's rates of infection were lower than the south of the county, but recognised it is "not a cause for celebration."
"The virus does not know borders so it will be spreading in our direction."
Councillor Cory added: "Our numbers are still rising here too. We must think about protecting our families at Christmas and our loved ones.
"I want to go and see my parents at Christmas and I want to protect them, so I will be acting with caution, with care, and if we act collectively we can beat the virus."
He is urging residents to continue following Hands, Face, Space guidance by washing hands regularly and thoroughly, wearing face coverings, and maintaining two metres social distance.
This week also saw the beginning of the local roll-out of vaccinations at a number of centres in north east Essex for people in priority groups.
The NHS is urging residents not to call GPs about the vaccination, as people will be contacted when it is their turn.
