Essex teenager charged in connection with terror offences

The 17-year-old was arrested under the Terrorism Act as part of a pre-planned operation

The 17-year-old from Essex was detained on Tuesday 29th December as part of an intelligence-led operation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East, supported by Eastern Region Special Operations Unit and Essex Police.

Two properties in Chelmsford and Brentwood were also searched in connection with the arrest.

On Sunday 3rd January, the teenager was charged with four offences of possessing material likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, one of disseminating a terrorist publication, and one of engaging in the preparation of an act of terrorism.

He appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court via video link this morning and was remanded in custody before an appearance at the Old Bailey on 22nd January.
