Essex parents raise money in memory of son with rare genetic condition
Rycroft died just four months after his first birthday, his dad told us he is a 'gorgeous little boy'
A couple from Essex are raising funds in memory of their son, Rycroft, who tragically passed away at the tender age of 16 months due to a rare genetic condition.
Andrew Foster and Catherine Alport have set up a JustGiving page to support charities that help children suffering from Shwachman Diamond syndrome (SDS) and provide essential medical care.
"Shwachman Diamond syndrome is a very rare condition, affecting about one in 100,000 people. Some individuals might not even realize they have it until adulthood, but for Rycroft, it became apparent while Catherine was pregnant," Andrew explained. Early genetic testing led to a diagnosis at just three weeks old.
"Rycroft was very unlucky, as he had severe bone marrow failure in his first year of life," Andrew continued. "So, at just 13 months old, he underwent a bone marrow transplant. Though the transplant had some success, his young age and vulnerability made him unable to fight off infections, and he passed away."
Andrew and Catherine's JustGiving page aims to raise awareness and funds for SDS UK, an organization dedicated to supporting those affected by Shwachman Diamond syndrome. Additionally, they hope to provide assistance to the Colchester Hospital children in their area, including children like Rycroft, as well as the renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital that provides care to children across the country.
"Everyone at Colchester General Hospital knew Rycroft. The care he received there was exceptional, and they treated him like one of their own," Andrew gratefully expressed. "Catherine and I got to know all the people there, including the nurses and doctors, who showed genuine care and consideration for Rycroft."
Starting with a target of £3,000, Andrew says they've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and generosity. They have now increased their target to £36,000, which they are confident of surpassing. The funds will not only support essential medical care but also help create lasting initiatives and legacies in Rycroft's name.
"We are deeply touched by the messages of support we have received through the JustGiving page," Andrew shared. "Even if people don't have the right words, their act of reaching out and showing they care means a lot to us. The love and care shown by strangers reaffirm the impact Rycroft's life had, even though it was cut tragically short."
The couple finds hope and comfort in knowing that Rycroft's memory will live on through their efforts to help others battling rare genetic conditions like Shwachman Diamond syndrome.
