200 cars burn after fire at Essex scrap yard

Fire fighters are still at the scene in Rochford where the blaze started at 9pm last night.

An investigation is underway while crews continue to work on fire hotspots at the scrapyard.

Due to the size of the blaze, 60 firefighters were at the scene overnight. While some Essex Fire and Rescue staff remain at the scene, a fire break has been created to stop the flames spreading.

There are around 2000 cars in the yard, and around 200 were on fire, with the blaze able to spread with rows of vehicles stacked in two's or three's.

Update 10:45pm - There are current around 60 firefighters at the scene tacking the fire. Nearby residents are being advised to close their windows.

The cars are stacked in rows of three storeys. Firefighters have the fire contained and have created a fire break to stop the fire spreading to the remaining cars. There is approximately 2000 cars at the site.
