The Essex FA, governing body for football in the region, has taken a proactive stance in addressing the issue of girls dropping out of the sport due to challenges associated with menstruation.

Recognizing the importance of creating inclusive environments within grassroots clubs, the organization has initiated efforts to support and retain female players throughout their sporting journey.

Ellie Finneran, a prominent figure within Essex FA's football development program, shed light on the significance of this initiative. Finneran, who serves as the football development officer for South Essex, highlighted the research indicating a concerning trend of girls discontinuing their participation in sports, particularly after puberty.

"The menstrual cycle could potentially be a barrier to participation or limit some individuals' involvement in the game," Finneran stated.

"Creating better experiences within the grassroots game and ensuring safe and inclusive environments are vital to addressing this issue."

Practical measures

Ellie emphasized the importance of providing necessary resources and facilities, such as readily available menstrual products within club premises and the inclusion of dark-colored shorts as part of the kit. Adequate access to toilets, complete with bins for proper disposal, as well as running water and soap, were also highlighted as essential components of creating a supportive environment for all players.

Essex FA has already taken steps to educate clubs and stakeholders about this topic. In collaboration with Rise International and leading researcher Dr. Sarah Zipp, the organization recently conducted a webinar that attracted over 60 participants. The webinar explored strategies to support players and engage with parents and caregivers in promoting awareness and understanding.

The recorded webinar, now accessible on Essex FA's website, provides valuable information and engaging discussions around the topic. Additionally, the website features links to research articles and educational resources that further enhance clubs' understanding and offer guidance on acquiring necessary products.

Clubs are encouraged to reach out for further support and assistance.
